Expertise Service

One of Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico’s principal aims is to stem the flow of counterfeit artwork. To this end, the Foundation offers an expertise service to private collectors, galleries, auction houses and museums for the registration of artwork considered as authentic work by Giorgio de Chirico.

In order to proceed with this service, the owner of an artwork is asked to first send in the following photographic material:

  • 5 black and white professional photographs of the front of the work (18 x 24 cm)
  • 3 black and white professional photographs of the back of the work (18 x 24 cm)
  • 2 colour photographs of the front of the work (18 x 24 cm)
  • 2 colour photographs of the back of the work (18 x 24 cm)
  • 1 colour slide, with colour scale, of the front of the work (6 x 9 cm), or one high-resolution (300 dpi) photograph of the front with colour scale saved on cd
  • 1 black and white professional photograph of the signature and edition number (for sculptures only) (18 x 24 cm)
  • 1 black and white professional photograph of the foundry stamp (for sculptures only) (18 x 24 cm)

In addition to the photographic material, a brief description of the work is necessary (title, technique and measurements) as well as information regarding the artwork’s provenance. Any documents concerning the work (expertise, copy of notary public register, correspondence) must be included with the above material.

This material will be retained by the Foundation for archival purposes, regardless of the outcome of the expertise request.

Requests sent in without the applicants personal contact information will not be accepted.

Should preliminary research prove that an artwork is not already registered in the archive, the Foundation will ask the owner to send the piece to our Rome premises to be examined by the Committee for the acknowledgment of artwork by Giorgio de Chirico considered authentic.

Upon examination, should the work prove to have the necessary criteria to include it in the Archive of works by Giorgio de Chirico considered authentic, archival certification will be issued in the form of a black and white photograph of the work with a declaration on the back. Alternatively, should the work prove to lack sufficient elements with which to include it in the archive, the owner will receive an official letter to this effect.
